Saturday was a special day for the Mazey family as West Virginia University head coach Randy Mazey watched his son Weston record his first career base hit for the Mountaineers baseball team. Weston, who had to overcome a serious injury in 2021 that resulted in broken bones, a fractured skull, and a traumatic brain injury, singled up the middle in the top of the eighth inning to get his first hit. Both Randy and Weston's mother Amanda shared their excitement and pride on social media over the milestone moment.
Why it matters
The Mazey family has deep roots with the West Virginia baseball program, with Randy as the head coach and Weston growing up around the team as a bat boy and dugout observer. Weston's perseverance to return to the sport after his serious injury makes this first hit all the more meaningful for the family and the Mountaineer community.
The details
In March 2021, Weston Mazey was involved in a collision on the baseball field during practice that resulted in several broken bones in his face, a fractured skull, and a traumatic brain injury. The road to recovery was long, but Weston was determined to get back on the diamond and represent the Mountaineers, the team he had grown up around. On Saturday, Weston singled up the middle in the top of the eighth inning for his first career hit, a moment his family and the WVU community celebrated.
