The Simpson College baseball team completed its Florida trip with a sweep over Knox, winning 11-7 in game one and 16-3 in game two. The 12th-ranked Simpson softball team also had a dominant performance, routing Keene State 11-3 on Thursday.
Why it matters
The strong performances by both the baseball and softball teams showcase the overall strength of Simpson's athletic programs and their ability to compete at a high level against quality opponents, even on the road.
The details
In the baseball doubleheader, the Storm overcame an early deficit in game one with a seven-run fifth inning and carried that momentum into game two, amassing 16 hits and 16 runs, both season highs. Nate Cagley and Trenten Kingrey each belted two home runs, Jacob Roberts was 3-for-4 with four RBIs in game two, and Charlie Thomas and Easton Dunwoody combined for 15 strikeouts while picking up wins on the mound. For the softball team, Keene State plated one in the first but Simpson responded by capitalizing on an error and scoring Ashlyn Steen to tie up the ballgame. Megan Heidelbauer put the Storm on top in the third with a single to left, and the speed of Steen on the basepaths scored on the play. After a Mackenzie James RBI double in the fifth made it 5-3, Simpson poured it on in the sixth with six more runs.
