Door County Medical Center in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin has launched an Epic EHR system through a partnership with Hospital Sisters Health System, based in Springfield, Illinois. Instead of building its own Epic environment, the medical center chose to lease Hospital Sisters Health System's Epic instance, a decision the organizations said was more affordable and efficient than other options.
Why it matters
The shared Epic platform will consolidate patient records, allowing clinicians at Door County Medical Center and its partner Prevea Medical Group to access a patient's full medical history in one place. This integration is expected to improve care coordination and reduce administrative burden for the rural medical center.
The details
Door County Medical Center began exploring a transition to Epic in 2019 but delayed the move due to cost concerns. In summer 2023, the organization decided the investment was worthwhile and opted to lease Hospital Sisters Health System's existing Epic instance rather than build its own. The project officially kicked off in December 2024, and the new system went live on February 7, 2026.
