April is Donate Life Month, the 23rd year for the campaign to encourage people to register as organ donors. More than 108,000 adults and children in the United States, including 1,500 Wisconsinites, are awaiting an organ transplant. UW's Organ and Tissue Donation is one of the top transplant programs in the country, serving over 100 hospitals in Wisconsin, Michigan and Illinois.

Why it matters

Organ donation saves lives, but there is a severe shortage of registered donors. Donate Life Month aims to raise awareness and inspire more people to sign up as donors, which can make a critical difference for those waiting for transplants.

The details

Friday, April 7th is Blue Green Donation Day, when people are encouraged to wear blue and green to bring awareness to the cause of organ donation. Over the last 60 years, UW's transplant teams have transplanted more than 20,000 organs.
