The Ray Nitschke Memorial Bridge in downtown Green Bay will be closed for two and a half days next week as crews perform maintenance work. The bridge, which carries Dousman and Main streets across the Fox River, will be shut down from 6 a.m. on Monday through 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
Why it matters
The closure of the Nitschke Bridge will cause significant traffic disruptions in downtown Green Bay, as drivers will be detoured onto Broadway, Walnut Street, and Monroe Avenue. This is an important bridge for both vehicle and boat traffic, so the closure will impact commuters as well as river traffic.
The details
During the closure, Dousman Street will be closed at Broadway, and Main Street will be closed at Washington Street. The drawbridge portion of the Nitschke Bridge will also be closed, but vessels that can pass under the closed bridge will still be able to do so.

What’s next
Drivers should plan their routes accordingly and allow extra time for their commutes during the bridge closure. The city has advised that the drawbridge will also be closed to boat traffic, but vessels that can pass under the closed bridge will still be able to do so.
The takeaway
The temporary closure of the Nitschke Bridge in downtown Green Bay will cause significant traffic disruptions in the area, underscoring the importance of this critical piece of infrastructure for both vehicle and river traffic.
