A 42-year-old Monitor man suffered a medical emergency while dirt biking with his sons in Tripp Canyon. His 14-year-old son called 911 and was able to direct emergency responders to their remote location on a steep hillside, where the man had briefly lost consciousness. Rope rescue teams were called in to safely lower the patient down the rugged terrain to a waiting ambulance.
Why it matters
This incident highlights the importance of emergency preparedness and quick thinking, especially in remote outdoor recreation areas where access can be challenging for rescue crews. The teen's calm 911 call was crucial in guiding responders to the scene and facilitating a successful rescue.
The details
According to the Chelan County Sheriff's Office, responders were dispatched just after 3 p.m. on March 7 after a 911 call reported a rider experiencing a medical issue on a steep hillside in Tripp Canyon. The 42-year-old man had been dirt biking with his sons when he became dizzy and fell while helping reposition his 14-year-old son's bike. The teen immediately called 911 and was able to guide emergency crews to their location, which was about 300 feet up a very steep hillside. Medics evaluated the man and believed he was experiencing a possible heart-related medical issue. Due to the rugged terrain, the Sheriff's Office requested help from regional rope rescue teams, who used rope systems to safely lower the patient down the hillside to a waiting ambulance. He was then transported to Central Washington Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.
