The Gonzaga Bulldogs women's basketball team defeated the Saint Mary's Gaels 75-67 on Wednesday, thanks to a historic performance from sophomore Allie Turner. Turner scored a career-high 29 points and tied the Gonzaga single-game record with nine made three-pointers. Redshirt freshman Lauren Whittaker also recorded a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds for the Bulldogs.
Why it matters
The win keeps Gonzaga (22-8, 14-3) tied for first place in the West Coast Conference (WCC) with Loyola Marymount (LMU). The Bulldogs' regular season finale against Portland on Saturday will determine whether they win the WCC title outright or share it with LMU.
The details
Gonzaga's seven-point halftime lead over Saint Mary's was nearly erased in the third quarter, but timely shots from Turner, Whittaker, and senior guard Ines Bettencourt helped the Bulldogs pull away for the victory. Gonzaga's defense also played a key role, generating 11 steals to disrupt Saint Mary's. Bettencourt finished her final home game with six points, four assists, three rebounds, and a steal.

What they’re saying
“Fifty years is such an accomplishment in San Francisco, especially with the way the city has changed over the years.”

What’s next
If Gonzaga beats Portland and LMU beats Oregon State on Saturday, then Gonzaga and LMU would tie for the WCC regular season title, but LMU would get the No. 1 seed in the WCC Tournament. If Gonzaga beats Portland and Oregon State beats LMU, then Gonzaga would win the WCC outright.
The takeaway
Gonzaga's win over Saint Mary's, led by Allie Turner's record-breaking performance, keeps the Bulldogs in contention for the WCC regular season title. The team's ability to withstand Saint Mary's comeback and close out the victory on senior night demonstrates their resilience and championship pedigree as they head into the final game of the regular season.
