Why it matters
This incident highlights the challenges law enforcement face when dealing with armed and potentially suicidal individuals. It also raises questions about mental health resources and crisis intervention protocols in the Spokane Valley community.
The details
According to authorities, the driver of a blue Dodge pickup rammed two unoccupied parked vehicles and fled the scene. A neighbor began following the suspect vehicle and called 911, providing the Dodge's license plate number. Near the intersection of North Van Marter Road and East Valleyway Avenue, the driver stopped, exited the pickup, and walked toward the witness while holding a black object. The witness backed away, and the suspect then returned to his vehicle and drove off. Deputies located the Dodge near East Valleyway Avenue and North Raymond Road, where the adult male driver was holding a handgun to his head. Deputies gave repeated commands for the man to drop the weapon, and at one point he placed the firearm on the ground. When the man suddenly reached to retrieve the gun, deputies deployed less-lethal options, but they were ineffective. The man then grabbed the weapon, moved to the front of his vehicle, and fired the gun, fatally wounding himself.
