The Spokane County Sheriff's Office used footage from automated license plate reader (ALPR) cameras, known as 'Flock' cameras, to identify, locate and apprehend a suspect accused of stealing thousands of dollars worth of tools from a North Spokane business. Detectives were able to trace the suspect's getaway vehicle and ultimately pull him over and arrest him just days after the reported theft.
Why it matters
The use of ALPR cameras, which have faced some controversy over privacy concerns, demonstrates how this technology can aid law enforcement in solving crimes quickly. This case highlights the benefits of ALPR in helping deputies track down and arrest a suspected retail thief.
The details
On February 5th, a North Spokane business on the Newport Highway reported a man had entered their store, taken a number of expensive tools, concealed them under his jacket, and fled. Using ALPR footage and still images, detectives were able to identify the suspect's getaway vehicle as a Nissan pickup with Texas plates driven by 30-year-old Jared J. Munroe. A search for Munroe's truck led to his arrest on February 8th around 10:25 PM on Sullivan Road.
