University of Virginia Appoints New Anesthesiology Chair

The University of Virginia School of Medicine has named Dr. Michael Mazzeffi as the permanent chair of its Department of Anesthesiology, effective immediately. Dr. Mazzeffi has served as the interim chair since January 2025 and joined UVA in 2022 as a professor of anesthesiology.

Dr. Mazzeffi is board-certified in anesthesiology, critical care, and cardiac anesthesiology. Prior to joining UVA, he held leadership roles at the George Washington School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. and the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore. At UVA, he also serves as the medical director of the university's cardiothoracic ICU.
