The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia has launched the Level Up initiative to provide free assistance with completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and exploring post-graduation options like trade schools and certificate programs. The program is partnering with school systems across the state to help students navigate the financial aid process, which on average takes 15-17 minutes to complete. In Virginia last year, over 71,000 people applied for financial aid, with many qualifying for Pell Grants between $5,000 and $7,000.
Why it matters
The Level Up initiative aims to make the financial aid application process more accessible and guide students towards educational and career paths that fit their goals. By providing free support, the program hopes to open up more opportunities for students to pursue higher education or vocational training after high school graduation.
The details
Through the Level Up program, students can access a free help desk by text with a live person available to assist with FAFSA completion. The program also helps students explore certificate programs at Virginia's community colleges that they can fund using financial aid. Level Up is partnering with school systems like Accomack County and Hampton to reach students and provide this guidance.
