As winter winds down, professional organizers across the South recommend parting ways with six items to make room for spring: old linens, expired makeup and skincare, worn winter gear, piled-up newspapers and magazines, cluttered garage items, and expired pantry goods.
Why it matters
Decluttering these items before spring can help create a fresh, organized start to the new season and make way for lighter, warmer-weather items and activities. It also allows people to donate or properly dispose of items they no longer need.
The details
Organizers suggest swapping out heavy winter bedding for lighter spring/summer linens, tossing old makeup and skincare samples, getting rid of worn gloves and socks, culling piles of old magazines and newspapers, clearing out unused sports equipment and tools in the garage, and checking pantry items for expiration dates.
- March is a great time to swap out winter bedding and linens.
- Spring is when people 'emerge from hiding' and may want to update their beauty routines.

What they’re saying
“March is a great time to make room for your lighter spring and summer friendly bedding.”
— Kim Martinez, Founder of Kim Martinez Home Organizing and Wardrobe Consulting
“Spring is when we emerge from hiding.”
— Tara Yarborough, Founder of Bee Organized Northwest Arkansas
“Those gloves and winter socks with holes in them or are stained, toss them. There is no sense in keeping things that you cannot use next year—clear out the clutter and create extra space for the upcoming season.”
— Audra George, Founder of Pretty Neat OK
“The only reason we'd recommend keeping either of these are for sentimental reasons, and in that case, you can clip out the article or page that you're wanting to keep. You are most likely not ever going to 'refer back' to a magazine you read once.”
— Aubry Mayfield-Loats, Co-founder of Stay Golden Organizing
“As spring arrives and we get into our garages and start working outside, if you come across broken or rusted yard tools, let them go. They'll clog up valuable real estate in your garage.”
— Caroline Dockery, Founder of Categorically Caroline
The takeaway
Decluttering these six types of items before spring can help create a fresh, organized start to the new season and make way for lighter, warmer-weather items and activities. It also allows people to donate or properly dispose of items they no longer need.
