The WKU Softball team earned its sixth straight victory with a 5-1 win over Lipscomb at the WKU Softball Complex on Tuesday night. The Hilltopper offense came out strong, going 8-for-24 at the plate and 4-for-6 on leadoffs, while sophomore pitcher Erica Houge earned her 15th win of the season with five solid innings in the circle. WKU will now hit the road to face Liberty this weekend in a Conference USA series.

Why it matters

The win extends WKU's hot streak to six games as they prepare to hit the road for a key conference matchup. The Hilltoppers have been dominant at home this season, going 20-1, and will look to carry that success on the road against a tough Liberty squad.

The details

WKU jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, highlighted by a two-RBI single from sophomore third baseman Katie Murphy in the first inning and a solo home run from junior infielder Maci Masters in the second. Freshman catcher Lauren Satterly also drove in a run with an RBI double. Lipscomb was able to scratch across an unearned run in the fifth, but junior right-hander Rylan Smith came in to shut the door, allowing just two hits and striking out four over the final two innings.

What they’re saying

“Setting the tone is just big for us, so if we're able to come out hard and early, then we'll be able to do that.”

— Katie Murphy, Sophomore Third Baseman

“You just got to find some timely hits, get on base (or) get a walk. I think when our circle is holding it down, it takes a little bit off the offense as well, so I thought that was good.”

— Amy Tudor, Head Coach
