Despite shooting just 28.4% from the field and 22.2% from 3-point range, the Virginia Tech women's basketball team rallied in the second half to defeat Georgia Tech 62-51 on Sunday. The Hokies held the Yellow Jackets to only 19 points in the final 20 minutes to secure the victory on their Senior Day.
Why it matters
The win keeps Virginia Tech in contention for a higher seed in the upcoming ACC Tournament, as they currently sit in seventh place in the conference standings. The Hokies have played strong defense of late, holding opponents under 70 points in all but two of their last 13 games.
The details
Virginia Tech struggled offensively in the first half, shooting just 30.6% from the field and 16.7% from 3-point range. However, the Hokies tightened up their defense in the second half, holding Georgia Tech to only 19 points and forcing the Yellow Jackets to miss 14 consecutive shots at one point. Virginia Tech went on a 10-0 run to start the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.

What they’re saying
“I'm just incredibly proud of the focus and grit to get better every day. Coming off two nice wins in California, you can have a letdown. And even though we didn't end up beating North Carolina the other day, there was still confidence about us that you can see we're getting better defensively. We're moving and sharing the ball.”
— Megan Duffy, Head Coach, Virginia Tech Women's Basketball
“This team continues to stay motivated to work on small things, and we needed that today. We were not at our best, and we knew coming in with Georgia Tech, the way they're physical, they got nothing to lose. ... It's like all those little plays add up, and you can pull away. I'm very proud of the grit they showed — this week especially.”
— Megan Duffy, Head Coach, Virginia Tech Women's Basketball
What’s next
Virginia Tech will wrap up the regular season on Sunday, March 1 with a road game against Virginia. The Hokies previously defeated the Cavaliers 76-64 on February 1.
The takeaway
Despite an off shooting night, Virginia Tech's stifling defense in the second half was the key to their victory over Georgia Tech. The Hokies' ability to lock down on defense and force turnovers has been a major factor in their success this season as they look to secure a higher seed in the upcoming ACC Tournament.
