Virginia baseball has its own version of MLB superstar Shohei Ohtani in junior utilityman Kyle Johnson, a Duke transfer who will start as a left-handed pitcher, hit right-handed, and play right field for the Cavaliers this season. Johnson, who followed coach Chris Pollard from Duke, was named one of Virginia's four team captains despite being new to the program.
Why it matters
Johnson's versatility and talent make him a key piece for the Cavaliers as they look to continue the program's tradition of postseason success under new head coach Chris Pollard. His ability to excel as both a pitcher and hitter mirrors the unique skillset of Ohtani, the face of Major League Baseball.
The details
Johnson will have a rigorous schedule, practicing pitching on Tuesdays, starting on the mound on Fridays, and playing designated hitter or right field the rest of the time. He is the only player Pollard expects to take on this multifaceted role. While Johnson struggled at times as a sophomore at Duke, Pollard believes the best is yet to come and that Johnson's greatest impact will be on the mound as Virginia's top pitcher.
- Johnson was named one of Virginia's four team captains for the 2026 season.
- Johnson will take the mound for the Cavaliers' season opener against Wagner on February 13.
The players
Kyle Johnson
A junior utilityman who transferred from Duke to Virginia, Johnson will start as a left-handed pitcher, hit right-handed, and play right field for the Cavaliers this season. He was named one of the team's four captains despite being new to the program.
Chris Pollard
The new head coach of the Virginia baseball team, Pollard previously coached Johnson at Duke and believes the versatile junior has the potential to make a major impact on the mound and at the plate for the Cavaliers.
AJ Gracia
A junior outfielder who has transferred to Virginia from Duke, where he was suspended last season, allowing Johnson to fill in for him during the Durham Super Regional.
What they’re saying
“Kyle Johnson really emerged this fall. So proud of that dude, and his growth, not just physically, but just his growth as a person … going through some of the struggles that he went through last year has just made him a tougher competitor.”
— Chris Pollard, Head Coach
“[Johnson] knows that his greatest ability to impact our team is on a mound, but he said, 'look, Coach, I know this might be my last year swinging a bat. If it is, I want to go out doing everything I can to help this team win and having fun with it.' And right now, he's a guy that's going to get a lot of at-bats for us.”
— Chris Pollard, Head Coach
“Definitely a big highlight for my season. Sort of wanted to try to fill some big shoes right there with AJ being out of the lineup.”
— Kyle Johnson
“It was a really quick transition, for sure, but I feel like they're both amazing coaches. When Coach Pollard got the job here, a lot of U.Va. fans were just as happy as they were with [O'Connor] here.”
— Kyle Johnson
“I feel like this team has everything they need to win a national championship.”
— Kyle Johnson
What’s next
Johnson is expected to start on the mound for Virginia in the season opener against Wagner on February 13.
The takeaway
Virginia has found its own version of MLB's Shohei Ohtani in Kyle Johnson, a versatile junior who will be a key contributor on the mound, at the plate, and in the field as the Cavaliers look to continue their tradition of postseason success under new head coach Chris Pollard.
