The Virginia Tech Hokies baseball team completed a weekend sweep over the William and Mary Tribe, winning both games of a Saturday doubleheader by scores of 8-7 and 8-2. In the first game, the Hokies rallied late to win on a walk-off single by transfer Sam Grube. In the second game, the Hokies jumped out to an early lead and cruised to the victory.
Why it matters
The sweep over William and Mary marks the first time the Hokies have opened a season 3-0 since 2022, the same year they hosted their only Super Regional appearance. The wins also showcase the depth of the Hokies' roster, with contributions from both veteran and freshman players.
The details
In the first game, Virginia Tech redshirt junior Griffin Stieg made his return to the mound after missing the entire 2025 season with an injury. He tossed 4.2 innings, allowing 2 earned runs. The Hokies rallied late, with a 3-run homer by freshman Jamie Laskofski and a 2-run blast by redshirt sophomore Trey Christman to tie the game in the 9th. In the bottom of the 9th, transfer Sam Grube delivered the walk-off single to win it for the Hokies. In the second game, freshman Ethan Grim got the start for Tech and settled in after a shaky first inning. The Hokies' offense provided plenty of support, scoring 3 runs in the 1st and 4 more in the 6th to cruise to the victory.
- The doubleheader sweep was completed on Saturday, February 14, 2026.
- Virginia Tech's last 3-0 start to a season was in 2022.

What they’re saying
“That's a long time, 15 months. It's good to see a young player get rewarded for his patience and work. He had a good outing.”
— John Szefc, Virginia Tech Head Coach
“Obviously, it was definitely nerve wracking. But it's always good to be back out there competing... It's the best part of it.”

“I think I faced him [Smith] twice. It's uncomfortable.”
