As a student at Grantsville High in the 1970s, Sandberg excelled in football, basketball, baseball, and tennis, earning all-state honors in football and baseball. He served as team captain for each sport. After college and a mission, Sandberg returned to education, teaching and coaching at several schools in the region. He spent over a decade at Tooele High, where he was an assistant coach for the 1996 4A State Championship baseball team. In 2004, Sandberg returned to his alma mater, Grantsville High, where he taught history and served as an assistant coach for the softball team, which won four 3A State Softball Championships between 2017-2021. Sandberg also worked as the school librarian in his final years before retirement.
