The Utah Department of Transportation has opened a new eastbound auxiliary lane on I-80 between the Lake Point on-ramp and the SR-201 off-ramp. The project, which began in June 2025, is intended to improve safety and traffic flow by allowing drivers headed to SR-201 to avoid merging onto I-80 and then immediately exiting.

The new lane is expected to ease congestion and improve the commute for drivers traveling eastbound out of Tooele County towards Salt Lake City. While a significant milestone, UDOT says drivers should still expect to see crews working on the shoulder through spring 2026.
The details
UDOT started work on the eastbound auxiliary lane on June 16, 2025 with the goal of allowing drivers headed to SR-201 to bypass the need to merge onto I-80 and then immediately exit. The new lane opened to commuters on Monday morning.
