According to court documents, on April 3, just after midnight, the Salt Lake City Police Department's SWAT team was serving a residential search warrant at Vigil's home. As officers were breaching the front door, they reported seeing Vigil attempt to jump out a rear window before going back inside. Officers then spotted Vigil allegedly holding what looked like a handgun and attempting to push out a window screen. An officer fired at Vigil, striking him at least once. A pistol was later found outside the apartment, directly below the window.
