Petzl America is recalling about 4,200 Nomic and Ergonomic ice climbing axes after the company received 26 reports of the ice axe shafts breaking at the handle during use, posing a serious fall hazard and risk of injury or death. An additional 1,160 units were sold in Canada and are included in a parallel Canadian recall.

Why it matters

Ice climbing is an inherently dangerous sport, and any equipment failure that could lead to a climber falling poses grave risks. This recall highlights the importance of rigorous product testing and quality control, especially for safety-critical gear used in extreme sports.

The details

The recall covers two Petzl ice axe models: the Nomic (model U021AA00) and the Ergonomic (model U022AA00). Both axes are made from an aluminum shaft, a steel pick, and a reinforced plastic grip.
