The United States Olympic team won its record-breaking 11th gold medal of the 2026 Winter Games on Saturday, with at least one more chance to add to the tally when the men's hockey team faces Canada in the title game on closing day. The 11 golds break the previous U.S. record set at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics, with medals coming from a wide variety of sports disciplines.
Why it matters
This achievement marks a significant milestone for the U.S. winter sports program, which has worked to improve performance across a broad range of events rather than focusing on dominating a few select disciplines. The diverse medal haul shows the depth and breadth of American winter sports talent.
The details
The trio of Kaila Kuhn, Connor Curran and Chris Lillis gave the U.S. the record-breaking 11th gold by capturing the American team's second straight title in mixed aerials. Later in the day, Mia Manganello added a bronze medal in speedskating. In total, the U.S. has won 31 medals so far, second only to Norway's 40. The biggest gold-medal hauls for the U.S. came in Alpine skiing, freestyle skiing, figure skating and speedskating.

What they’re saying
“Our focus and our strategy has always been about breadth. We want to win in everything. We want to make every sport better. Some could argue there are countries that go a mile deep in certain sports and really dominate. Our goal has been to improve Winter sport across the board.”
— Sarah Hirshland, CEO, U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee (dailypress.net)
“We stated we wanted to be a podium nation. We said it will likely take 30 medals and we got after it. The athletes delivered on their potential and, by turn, we hit the record on gold-medal performance, which shows that our very best were able to execute.”
— Fin Kirwan, Chief of Olympic Sport, USOPC (dailypress.net)
