Hidden beneath downtown Salt Lake City, Himitsu Station is a new interactive 'escape room experience' created by husband-and-wife team Jaysen and Destiny Batchelor. Inspired by the charming underground markets of Japan's Akihabara Station, the couple built an immersive space complete with 1980s Japanese design, an original synth soundtrack, and high-tech show control systems more commonly found in theme parks. Despite having little prior experience, the Batchelors poured their savings into realizing their dream of creating an original and exotic entertainment attraction for Salt Lake City.
Why it matters
In a city often criticized for playing it safe, the Batchelors' Himitsu Station represents a bold, creative risk that aims to challenge the status quo of entertainment offerings in Salt Lake. By tapping into international influences and embracing a DIY ethos, the couple has created a unique attraction that could inspire others to be more ambitious and innovative in their own endeavors.
The details
Himitsu Station is billed as an 'interactive, live video game' experience where the goal is to collect as many points as possible, rather than simply 'escaping.' The space features 1980s Japanese underground design elements, an originally composed synth soundtrack, and high-tech show control systems that the Batchelors taught themselves to use. The couple hatched the idea in October 2023 and have been working to bring their vision of a mythical Japanese train station to life ever since, despite having little prior experience in entertainment design and production.

What they’re saying
“This is the show control tower — this is actually what controls all the audio, lighting and visuals. This is actually the same technology a theme park would use.”
— Jaysen Batchelor, Co-owner and creator (KSL)
“Me and my husband, Jaysen, have been into the entertainment industry as long as we can remember, as long as the beginning of our marriage — it's something we just really connected on. We were, like, always dissatisfied after leaving escape rooms, so we were just kind of like, 'What would we want in an escape room?'”
— Destiny Batchelor, Co-owner and creator (KSL)
What’s next
The Batchelors plan to continue evolving Himitsu Station, utilizing the remaining 3,000 square feet of space they have to expand the experience.
The takeaway
Himitsu Station represents a bold, creative risk taken by a husband-wife team to challenge the status quo of entertainment offerings in Salt Lake City. By tapping into international influences and embracing a DIY ethos, the Batchelors have created a unique attraction that could inspire others to be more ambitious and innovative in their own endeavors.
