The No. 10 BYU men's volleyball team swept Concordia University Irvine on Friday night, winning 25-17, 25-14, 25-21 in their return to the Smith Fieldhouse after a lengthy road trip. The Cougars had a balanced offensive attack with three players recording eight kills each, and they never trailed in the match.

Why it matters

BYU had been on the road for six straight matches prior to this home contest, so the return to their home court and familiar environment was important for the team to regain their rhythm and confidence after a pair of losses last weekend.

The details

BYU head coach Shawn Olmstead praised the team's balanced attack, with senior setter Tyler Herget doing a "tremendous job" of distributing the ball across the court. The Cougars took control of the first set with a 6-0 run, then cruised in the second set before holding off a late CUI charge in the third set to complete the sweep.

  • BYU last fell to Concordia University Irvine seven years ago in Irvine.
  • The two teams will play again on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. in the Smith Fieldhouse.

What they’re saying

“It was important to get our guys back on the court. They needed to get in that groove and build that confidence.”

— Shawn Olmstead, BYU Head Coach

“(Herget) followed our game plan to a T. We knew that (CUI was) going to bunch in real tight blocking. That's what they do. … A lot of times for us, we want to set our middles pretty early in the match to get the ball to those guys, and we wanted (Herget) to do the opposite (tonight).”
