Sam Winebaum reviews the Merrell Rogue Tactical Gore-Tex, a hiking boot that features the nimble cushioned undercarriage of a trail running shoe, aggressive MegaGrip traction, and a higher upper that provides high-reaching and effective support without being overly rigid. The boot is relatively light at 476g/16.6oz, has a superb traction in mud and snow, and a forgiving slightly bouncy midsole that remains stable.
Why it matters
The Rogue Tactical offers a versatile option for hikers and trekkers who want the comfort and agility of a trail running shoe combined with the support and protection of a higher-profile boot, especially in wet and cold conditions. Its premium construction and features make it a compelling choice for long days on the trail.
The details
The Rogue Tactical has a ballistic mesh upper with protective overlays and a Gore-Tex booty-style construction. The rear features a firm TPU external heel clip with softer, more pliable materials higher up, providing excellent ground-level and lower-leg support without being overly rigid. The softly padded tongue, oval laces, and lack of hooks allow for a secure, comfortable, and high-hold fit with ease of forward flex. The midsole uses Merrell's FloatPro foam for moderate bounce and cushion, combined with a front rocker and some flex for a lively, forward-rolling ride. The Vibram MegaGrip outsole with 5-10mm lugs delivers outstanding traction in mud, snow, and on technical terrain, while also providing a smooth ride on harder surfaces.

The players
Sam Winebaum
The editor and founder of Road Trail Run, who has been running roads and trails for over 50 years.

Vibram
An Italian company that manufactures high-performance rubber outsoles, including the Vibram MegaGrip outsole used on the Rogue Tactical.
What they’re saying
“The Rogue checks several hiking and trekking boxes for me: very robust support front to back in a comfortable upper that reminds more of a trail runner than 'boot' even with its high rear collars. Decently light for such a 'big' boot. An easy to roll geometry and forgiving midsole that is clearly designed for long 'marches' on any kind of terrain. Outstanding deep Vibram traction for technical terrain, mud and snow that is not in the way on smoother trails and even pavement.”
— Sam Winebaum, Editor and Founder, Road Trail Run
What’s next
The review will be updated in spring when more dirt appears, but Winebaum was able to test the Rogue Tactical on dirt non-technical trails, mud, snow, and on pavement and gravel, and it performed well everywhere.
The takeaway
The Merrell Rogue Tactical Gore-Tex offers a compelling combination of comfort, support, and traction in a versatile hiking boot that can handle a variety of terrain and conditions. Its premium construction and features make it a strong option for long days on the trail, especially in wet and cold weather.
