Stellantis has unveiled its latest factory restomod project for the annual Easter Jeep Safari in Moab, Utah - a meticulously restored 1986 Jeep Cherokee XJ. Rather than going all-out with a seven-figure build, the design team opted for a more restrained approach that celebrates the XJ's iconic status and original character.
Why it matters
As the restomod scene continues to push the boundaries of what's possible with classic vehicles, this XJ project serves as a refreshing reminder that not every restoration needs to be a wildly expensive, over-the-top creation. Jeep's focus on authenticity and preserving the XJ's original spirit aligns with a growing desire among enthusiasts for more modest, thoughtful builds.
The details
The team sourced a pristine, low-mileage 1986 XJ and resisted the temptation to swap in a more powerful engine, instead keeping the original 2.8-liter V6. To accommodate larger off-road tires, they crafted custom carbon fiber fenders that mimic the stock look. Other updates include a 'root beer' roof wrap, period-correct seat covers, and vintage accessories to evoke the XJ's 1980s roots.
- The XJ restomod debuted at the 2026 Easter Jeep Safari event in Moab, Utah.
- Stellantis plans to display the vehicle at various shows throughout the remainder of 2026.
The players
Stellantis
The multinational automotive manufacturing corporation that owns the Jeep brand and created the XJ restomod for the 2026 Easter Jeep Safari.
Chris Piscatelli
The lead design manager for Jeep's Wrangler and Gladiator models, who views the XJ as an iconic vehicle from his youth.
What they’re saying
“Here at Jeep, we have a huge and super, super wide history of things that we've been into. It's not all Wranglers and CJs and Willys. There were so many other things. XJs, which is the original Cherokees, which came out in Eighty-Four, are particularly near and dear to us.”

What’s next
Stellantis has no plans to offer a kit similar to the XJ restomod, but says they would be willing to share notes with owners interested in undertaking a similar project themselves.
The takeaway
In an era of increasingly extravagant restomods, Jeep's XJ restomod project serves as a refreshing example of how to celebrate a classic vehicle's heritage and character without resorting to over-the-top modifications. This build proves that restraint and authenticity can be just as compelling as seven-figure builds.
