The Tyler Animal Services shelter in Texas is waiving adoption fees for dogs and cats during the month of April if people donate at least 6 bags of pet food to the local Pet Food Bank. The Pet Food Bank was established in 2015 to help families in need keep their pets by providing free food and supplies. Since its inception, the program has distributed over 36,000 pounds of pet food and litter.

Why it matters

Many East Texas families are facing tough financial times and having to make difficult decisions about keeping their pets due to the rising costs of food and other necessities. The free pet adoptions and pet food donations aim to support these families and prevent them from having to surrender their beloved animals to the shelter.

The details

To qualify for the free pet adoptions, people must donate at least 6 bags of pet food weighing 15 pounds or less. All donated food will go directly to the Pet Food Bank to help families in need. Adopted animals will be spayed/neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated. The normal adoption fee for dogs is $120 and $80 for cats.

  • The free pet adoption event runs throughout the month of April 2026.
