Tyler senior Felipe Velazquez pitched a dominant two-hitter, striking out six batters, to lead the Tyler Lions to a 15-0 three-inning victory over the Winona Wildcats in a non-district high school baseball game on Friday. The win improved Tyler's record to 4-7 on the season, while Winona fell to 0-5.
Why it matters
This game showcases the strong pitching performance of Tyler's Felipe Velazquez, who is looking to regain his form from his standout sophomore season when he was an All-East Texas pitcher. The lopsided victory also provides an opportunity for the Tyler Lions to build momentum heading into their upcoming district games.
The details
Velazquez was in control throughout the game, effectively locating his fastballs, curveballs, and changeups to limit the Winona offense to just two hits. On the offensive side, Tyler was led by DaMarkous Pierce, who had a triple and a single, and Malachi Deleon and Jayden Enchandy, who each had two hits. Several Tyler players scored multiple runs in the blowout victory.
- The game was played on Friday, March 7, 2026.
- Tyler will be on spring break next week but will play three important District 10-5A games, visiting Mount Pleasant on Tuesday, March 11 and Jacksonville on Saturday, March 14, while hosting Marshall on Friday, March 13.
- Winona will return to action on Tuesday, March 11, hosting Edgewood.

“It was great for Felipe to come here and throw strikes, filling up the zone. We need him to return to his sophomore form when he was an All-East Texas pitcher. He's slowly getting back into the groove.”
— Seth Gibson, Tyler Lions Coach (tylerpaper.com)
