Volkswagen's commercial vehicle division Traton and autonomous driving software company PlusAI have agreed to expand their existing partnership. Under the new deal, Traton will provide up to $25 million in non-dilutive R&D funding to integrate PlusAI's SuperDrive autonomous driving system into Traton's Scania, MAN, and International truck brands across the US and Europe.

Why it matters

The expanded partnership represents a significant step forward in the commercialization of autonomous trucking technology. By directly integrating PlusAI's self-driving capabilities into Traton's production lines, the companies aim to accelerate the deployment of Level 4 autonomous trucks in real-world freight operations.

The details

As part of the agreement, Traton will gain a board seat on PlusAI as the startup prepares for a public listing. The funding will support closer technical integration, safety validation, and go-to-market programs in both the US and Europe. Traton may also receive private warrants tied to early revenue targets generated by PlusAI's commercial activity using Traton-branded autonomous trucks.

  • The original partnership between Traton and PlusAI was first announced in 2024.
  • The companies have reported progress towards Level 4 autonomy, including fleet trials in Texas with a major North American logistics provider.
