Planned Parenthood South Texas has announced that it is expanding services and hours at its San Antonio health centers. The clinics are introducing self-HPV testing for cervical cancer screening, same-day 'peace of mind' testing for chlamydia and gonorrhea, and providing more-affordable birth control pills. The Babcock Road location will now operate on Saturdays, and the San Pedro Ave. location will open twice a month on Saturdays as well. Officials say the expansion aims to make preventive healthcare more accessible for patients who face barriers like busy schedules, limited transportation, and difficulty taking time off.

Why it matters

This expansion by Planned Parenthood South Texas comes as patients in the Lone Star State face growing obstacles to accessing reproductive and sexual healthcare. The new services and hours are intended to make it easier for people, especially Hispanic women who face higher rates of cervical cancer, to prioritize their health and get the preventive care they need.

The details

As part of the expansion, Planned Parenthood South Texas is introducing self-HPV testing for cervical cancer screening, same-day 'peace of mind' testing for chlamydia and gonorrhea, and providing more-affordable birth control pills starting at $8 per month for those who qualify. The Babcock Road location will now operate 8 a.m.-noon every Saturday in addition to its regular hours, while the San Pedro Ave. location will open twice a month with those same Saturday hours.

What they’re saying

“Everyone deserves access to preventive health care that is respectful, affordable and easy to access. Many patients delay cervical cancer screenings because they are nervous about pelvic exams or struggle to find time for appointments. By offering self-HPV testing that allows patients to screen for cervical cancer without a pelvic exam, along with same-day STI testing and expanded clinic hours, we are making it easier for people to prioritize their health and get the preventive care they need.”
