The first-ever Richardson ISD Battle of the Books brought together 8 teams from across junior high and middle schools for a competitive trivia-style showdown built entirely around knowledge of 5 books. The event, spearheaded by the Library and Instructional Technology department, was initiated as a way to ignite the love of reading for secondary students.
Why it matters
The Battle of the Books competition encourages students to read more and become experts on popular books, fostering a love of reading and literature. It also promotes teamwork, collaboration, and critical thinking skills as students work together to answer challenging trivia questions.
The details
Each team prepared for months, reading and re-reading the 5 books to become true experts on the stories. The competition took place in three rounds, with 25 questions increasing in difficulty. Students had 30-40 seconds per question to collaborate with their teams before arriving at consensus. Questions dove into plot details, characters, key moments, and more. In addition to the questions, teams created their own creative team name and posters.
- The inaugural event took place on March 2, 2026.
- The High School Battle of the Books will be held on Friday, March 13, 2026 at 9:30 a.m. at Richardson High School.
