The Midland Reporter-Telegram is honoring a male and female athlete of the week, sponsored by Midland Athletic Syndicate, based on online fan voting. Varsity coaches can submit nominations each week, and this week's nominees include standout performances in golf, track and field, and softball.
Why it matters
The Athlete of the Week award recognizes exceptional high school athletic achievements in the Midland, Texas region, celebrating the hard work and talent of local student-athletes and generating community engagement through the fan voting process.
The details
The Reporter-Telegram will open online voting for the Athlete of the Week award at 8am on Monday, with voting closing at 3pm on Wednesday. The winners will be announced on Friday or in the Saturday print edition. This week's male nominees include golfer Carson Lopez of Legacy, track star Nic Moore of Legacy, and shot put/discus champion Rowdy Pearce of Midland Christian. The female nominees are softball pitcher Maddy Munoz of Midland Christian, track and field athlete Ibunkun Subair of Legacy, and softball player Kamryn Weir of Midland High.
- Voting opens at 8am on Monday, April 7.
- Voting closes at 3pm on Wednesday, April 9.
- Winners will be announced on Friday, April 11 or in the Saturday, April 12 print edition.

Carson Lopez
A junior golfer at Legacy High School who placed third in the District 2-6A Boys Golf Championship and qualified as an individual for the Region I-6A tournament.
Nic Moore
A senior track and field athlete at Legacy High School who won five gold medals to help the Rebels repeat as District 2-6A champions.
Rowdy Pearce
A senior thrower at Midland Christian School who won the shot put and discus events at the Cotton Patch Wall Relays track and field meet.
Maddy Munoz
A sophomore softball pitcher at Midland Christian School who threw a six-inning shutout and had a strong performance at the plate to lead her team to two wins over Lubbock Trinity.
Ibunkun Subair
A sophomore track and field athlete at Legacy High School who won the discus and placed second in the shot put to help the Lady Rebels win their first district title since 2006.
Kamryn Weir
A junior softball player at Midland High School who had a dominant offensive and pitching performance to lead her team to two blowout district wins.
What’s next
Fans can go online each week at www.mrt.com/aotw at 8 a.m. Monday to vote for the male and female Athlete of the Week. Voting will close each week at 3 p.m. Wednesday, and the winners will be unveiled on mrt.com on Friday or in Saturday's print edition of the Midland Reporter-Telegram.
