The Frenship Tigers routed the Midland Legacy Rebels 13-3 in six innings in the opener of their District 2-6A baseball series on Thursday night. Frenship jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and never looked back, with starting pitcher Rhyan Mongelli delivering a strong performance on the mound and also hitting two home runs at the plate. The loss drops Legacy to 3-1 in district play, while Frenship improves to 3-1 as well.
Why it matters
This game highlights the strength of the Frenship baseball program, which has now put up double-digit runs against two different Midland ISD teams in the span of a week. The lopsided result raises questions about the competitiveness of the District 2-6A race, with Frenship and Legacy both considered contenders. The game also marks the last time Frenship will visit Midland's Ernie Johnson Field, as the Tigers are set to drop down to Class 5A in the 2027-28 school year.
The details
Frenship jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, capitalizing on an error by Legacy to score three runs, including a two-run homer by Rhyan Mongelli. Legacy pulled within 4-1 in the third inning, but Mongelli and the Frenship offense proved too much, as Mongelli hit two home runs and drove in three runs. Frenship then broke the game open with a seven-run sixth inning to invoke the run rule. Legacy committed four errors in the sixth to aid Frenship's big inning.
- The series shifts to Wolfforth on Friday for a doubleheader starting at 4:30 p.m.
- A decision will be made Friday morning on whether to move the Friday doubleheader to Saturday due to strong winds in the forecast
The players
Rhyan Mongelli
Frenship's starting pitcher, who earned the win by allowing one run on four hits over five innings. Mongelli also hit two home runs and drove in three runs at the plate.
Chad Reynolds
Frenship's head coach, who praised Mongelli's competitiveness and said he is the team's "bulldog" on the mound.
Reese King
Legacy's leadoff hitter, who singled, stole third base, and scored the Rebels' first run on a throwing error.
Nick Munt
Legacy's starting pitcher, who took the loss.
Brycen Stevens
Legacy player who went 2-for-2 with a hit-by-pitch and scored one of the Rebels' two runs in the sixth inning.
What they’re saying
“His role has changed a little bit this year. He's our bulldog. Every time out, we know what we're going to get from him. He's just a highly competitive guy.”
— Chad Reynolds, Frenship Head Coach
“It's a fun place to play at. The wind always blows out. You can get some (homers). I thought they were going to be some (homers) against me, but I didn't let it affect me.”
— Rhyan Mongelli
What’s next
The judge in the case will decide on Tuesday whether or not to allow Walker Reed Quinn out on bail.
The takeaway
This game showcases Frenship's offensive firepower and pitching depth, which could make them the team to beat in District 2-6A. For Legacy, the loss raises concerns about their ability to compete with the top teams in the district, though the Rebels will have a chance to bounce back in the doubleheader on Friday.
