Three quarters of good basketball quickly evaporated for the Midland High girls basketball team as Odessa High used its pressure defense to create turnovers and go on a 21-2 fourth quarter run against the Lady Bulldogs. Odessa's guard pressure propelled the Lady Bronchos to a 57-41 win over MHS in a critical game for both teams on the outside of a playoff spot.
Why it matters
This loss was devastating for Midland High's slim playoff hopes, as they will now need to win out and get help from other teams to have a chance at the postseason. The game highlighted the importance of handling pressure defense, as Midland High struggled to execute their typical press breaker when Odessa High's trapping defense took them out of their comfort zone.
The details
Midland High entered the fourth quarter with a 39-36 lead, but Odessa High went on a 14-0 run to take control of the game. Odessa High guard Yaritza Carreon led the defensive effort with 8 steals, and Mya Hernandez scored key putbacks for the Lady Bronchos off of turnovers. Midland High seniors Kayden Young (16 points, 10 rebounds, 6 steals) and Cady Lange (13 points, 10 rebounds, 4 steals) had strong games, but the Lady Bulldogs were unable to overcome Odessa High's pressure.
