In No. 13 Texas Tech's 100-72 victory over Kansas State, senior guard Donovan Atwell scored a team-high 26 points and broke the program's single-season record for made three-pointers. Atwell knocked down five first-half three-pointers to surpass 94 made threes on the season, passing former Red Raider Cory Carr for the most in a single season. Texas Tech had five players finish in double figures as they improved to 20-7 overall and 10-4 in Big 12 play.
Why it matters
This win for Texas Tech comes after the team lost star forward JT Toppin to a season-ending ACL injury earlier in the week. The Red Raiders showed they can still thrive offensively without their leading scorer, as Atwell and Christian Anderson combined for 47 points in the blowout victory over Kansas State.
The details
Atwell scored 21 first-half points on 7-of-9 shooting, including 5-of-7 from three-point range, to help Texas Tech build a 49-35 halftime lead. The Red Raiders then pulled away in the second half, going on a 12-2 run in the final two minutes to seal the 100-72 win. Junior forward LeJuan Watts added 19 points, while Anderson scored 16 of his 21 points in the second half.

What they’re saying
“We were moving the ball well, doing a new thing, just punch and play, getting the motion going, pitch behinds, kick backs. My teammates found me in my spots, so it was a good night for sure.”
— Donovan Atwell, Texas Tech Senior Guard
“It's an honor, I feel like all glory to god for sure for putting me in this position to play the game I love every day. I'm just enjoying the ride.”
— Donovan Atwell, Texas Tech Senior Guard
“Obviously played a very inspired K-state team who I think has some of the best guard play in our league, and very difficult to defend, just the way our team came together and played for each other says a lot about this group. We've got great players, we really do, and shooting is always a big part of it...What a fun game to be a part of, just because it's going to take everybody, and we are going to need everybody to be great.”
— Grant McCasland, Texas Tech Head Coach
What’s next
Texas Tech will host Cincinnati on Tuesday evening in their final home game of the regular season. The Bearcats are coming off a big win over No. 8 Kansas, so this will be another tough test for the Red Raiders as they look to solidify their position in the Big 12 standings.
The takeaway
Texas Tech showed it can still thrive offensively without its star player, JT Toppin, as Donovan Atwell and Christian Anderson led the way in the blowout win over Kansas State. Atwell's record-breaking performance from three-point range was a bright spot, and the Red Raiders' ability to have multiple players step up will be crucial as they navigate the final stretch of the regular season.
