Houston ISD Launches Innovative Future 2 Schools

New education model focuses on AI literacy, critical thinking and real-world experiences.

Published on Feb. 25, 2026

Houston ISD is preparing to launch two Future 2 schools in the 2026-27 school year, introducing a new education model focused on AI literacy, critical thinking and real-world experiences. The program will emphasize skills like interpersonal skills, moral reasoning, empathy, collaboration and leadership that are difficult to automate.

Why it matters

With projections that 57% of jobs could be automated by 2030, Houston ISD is aiming to equip students with the skills needed to thrive in an AI-enabled world. The Future 2 model represents a shift from traditional instruction to one that embeds critical thinking directly into daily learning.

The details

The Future 2 schools will feature a dual-track academic model, with the first four hours of each day following the district's standard curriculum. High-performing students will have the option to enroll in an accelerated, AI-driven platform for reading and math. The school day will run from 7:30am to 4pm, with an additional two hours of optional programming. Instruction will be divided into three main blocks: coursework, experiences, and workshops. Advancement will be based on completing required coursework, experiences and workshops across a two-year learning sequence.

  • The Future 2 schools will launch in the 2026-27 school year.
  • Students currently zoned to C. Martinez and Gregg elementary schools will be automatically enrolled for the 2026-27 school year, though families may opt out.

What they’re saying

— Mike Miles, Superintendent (KHOU 11)

“The notion of students having experiences to build their knowledge is as old as Plato. In American public education, it's new because we don't think in terms like that.”

— Mike Miles, Superintendent (KHOU 11)

“The way to close the achievement gap is not to bring down our higher performing students but to grow our lower performing students faster.”

— Mike Miles, Superintendent (KHOU 11)

“You need to want to shape the future of public education. This is not regular school.”

— Dr. Nici Esch, Deputy Chief of Staff (KHOU 11)
