Prestonwood Christian's girls basketball team fell short in its bid to repeat as TAPPS 6A state champions, losing 70-56 to Houston The Village in the title game. Prestonwood, with no seniors on the roster, got 14 points from freshman Joanna Gossman but struggled with foul trouble and cold shooting as The Village's offense, led by 28 points from Hiu Lam Candice Tsiang, proved too much to overcome.

Why it matters

Prestonwood Christian was seeking its third state title in program history, but with a very young roster this season, the loss highlights the challenges of returning to the championship game after graduating seven seniors from last year's title-winning team. The game also showcased the talent of Houston The Village, which won its second state championship in program history.

The details

Prestonwood Christian led 22-12 early in the second quarter, but two of its starters got into foul trouble, allowing The Village to rally and take a 32-28 halftime lead. The Village then went on a 12-2 run to start the third quarter, pulling away for the victory. Tsiang did most of her damage driving to the basket, going 10-for-15 from the field for 28 points. Prestonwood shot just 35.2% from the field for the game.

What they’re saying

“When we had a couple of our key players in foul trouble and it shifted how we played. Overall, we're young. A lot of them had never been on this stage. You can't simulate those emotions.”

— Elgin Hollins, Head Coach, Prestonwood Christian (The Dallas Morning News)

“Each one of them has many moves, whether its spinning or crossing over with their dribbles. When we would help on defense, they would kick it out to the corner and they shot it well.”

— Elizabeth Teague, Junior Combo Guard, Prestonwood Christian (The Dallas Morning News)

“We had some injuries earlier this year, but we pulled together and we told each other we would go to state. This is really good for next year. We know what we're capable of we know what it will take to win it next year.”

— Elizabeth Teague, Junior Combo Guard, Prestonwood Christian (The Dallas Morning News)

What’s next

Prestonwood Christian will look to build on this season's run to the state championship game and make another title push next year, with the entire roster set to return.

The takeaway

Prestonwood Christian's young squad gained valuable experience in reaching the TAPPS 6A state title game, but ultimately fell short against a talented Houston The Village team that showcased its ability to create offense off the dribble. The loss highlights the challenge of repeating as champions after graduating a talented senior class, but also provides optimism for Prestonwood's future with its entire roster set to return next season.
