The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has elevated a nationwide recall of cake and bread mixes to a Class I designation, its most serious warning, due to the risk of severe illness or death from undeclared milk allergens. The recall involves 866 total bags of mixes from Dallas-based distributor B.C. Williams Bakery Service, including Spice Cake Mix, Bread and Roll Mix, and Swiss Chocolate Cake Mix.
Why it matters
Milk allergies are one of the most common food allergies, especially in children, and can cause symptoms ranging from vomiting and hives to the life-threatening reaction of anaphylaxis. This recall highlights the importance of proper allergen labeling to protect public health, especially for widely distributed food products.
The details
The recalled mixes may contain undeclared milk that could trigger severe reactions in people with milk allergies. The products were packaged in 50-pound bags and include 51 bags of Spice Cake Mix, 720 bags of Bread and Roll Mix, and 95 bags of Swiss Chocolate Cake Mix. A Class I recall is the FDA's most serious designation, indicating a reasonable probability that use of the product could cause serious adverse health consequences or death.
- The recall was first announced in December 2025.
