Strickland was born to Thomas Henry Strickland and Ollie L Zirkle Strickland. After his father's death, he left school to care for his mother and siblings, taking on responsibility at a young age. He went on to become a skilled craftsman, building homes and other structures in the surrounding area. Strickland was married twice, first to Beverly Ann Strickland for 35 years until her passing in 1996, and later to Michelle Strickland for 6 years until her passing in 2005. He is survived by his two children, four grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.
