With the recent Winter Olympics and hit TV shows sparking interest in ice sports, there are plenty of options for getting on the ice around Austin, Texas. From seasonal rinks to year-round facilities, the area offers opportunities for figure skating, hockey, curling, and more.
Why it matters
As a warm-weather city, Austin doesn't immediately come to mind for winter sports, but there are actually several ice rinks and clubs that cater to a range of skill levels and interests. This provides Austinites a chance to try out ice-based activities they may have only seen during the Olympics.
The details
Central Texas has several ice rinks, including the year-round Chaparral Ice and Ice and Field at the Crossover Sports Complex in Cedar Park. There are also seasonal rinks that pop up around the holidays at locations like the Long Center and Hill Country Galleria. For hockey, the area is home to the Texas Stars AHL team, the Pond Hockey Club, and youth programs through the Austin Metro Hockey Association. Figure skating is supported by clubs like Skate VIDA, the Austin Figure Skating Club, and Stars of Austin Figure Skating Club, many of which are based at the Ice and Field facility. And for curling enthusiasts, the Lone Star Curling Club in Austin is one of only three such clubs in Texas.
- The Texas Stars AHL hockey season runs from October to April, with upcoming home games on February 27 and 28.
- Seasonal ice rinks in Austin are typically open during the winter holiday months, but will not return until next winter.
