As the recruiting calendar reached mid-March, eight of the nation's 5-star recruits in the Rivals Industry Ranking have already made their commitment. The latest came on Saturday, as five-star San Diego (Calif.) Mater Dei Catholic athlete Honor Fa'alave-Johnson chose to stay home and go to USC over offers from Oregon, Texas, Notre Dame, Miami and LSU.
Why it matters
With nearly half of the top 5-star recruits already off the board, the 2027 college football recruiting cycle is shaping up to be highly competitive as programs look to land the nation's elite high school talent early in the process.
The details
The eight committed 5-star recruits in the Rivals Industry Ranking include defensive lineman Jalen Brewster (Texas Tech), edge rusher David Jacobs (Ohio State), running back Kemon Spell (Georgia), wide receivers Easton Royal (Texas) and Jamier Brown (Ohio State), offensive tackle Cooper Hackett (Oklahoma), safety Kamarui Dorsey (Texas A&M), and athlete Honor Fa'alave-Johnson (USC). These prospects have already made their college decisions, with several choosing traditional college football powers.

The players
Jalen Brewster
A defensive line prospect with true game-wrecking ability, Brewster is the No. 1 player in the Rivals Industry Ranking and will be playing at Texas Tech.
David Jacobs
One of the more physically-developed edge rusher prospects in the 2027 cycle, Jacobs racked up 24 sacks and 16 tackles for loss as a junior and will be taking his talents to Ohio State.
Kemon Spell
An all-encompassing running back that can win with power and elusiveness, Spell will be playing at Georgia.
Easton Royal
The most dynamic pass-catcher early in the 2027 cycle, Royal is a threat to score every time he touches the ball and will be suiting up for Texas.
Honor Fa'alave-Johnson
A unique athlete who could play four positions at the college level, Fa'alave-Johnson chose to stay home and play for USC.
What they’re saying
“Fa'alave-Johnson is one of the more unique athletes to come out of the West in some time and could legitimately play four positions at the college level.”
— Greg Biggins, Rivals National Analyst
“Jacobs looks to have one of the highest floors of the group and has done enough to earn a fifth star for Rivals. Jacobs is one of the more physically-developed edge rusher prospects in the cycle, checking in at around 6-foot-5, 235 pounds.”
— Charles Power, Rivals Director of Scouting and Rankings
What’s next
The judge in the case will decide on Tuesday whether or not to allow Walker Reed Quinn out on bail.
The takeaway
With nearly half of the top 5-star recruits in the 2027 class already committed, the race is on for college programs to land the nation's elite high school talent early in the recruiting cycle.
