The No. 9 Oregon State Beavers (21-6) hit the road this weekend to take on the Lamar Cardinals (17-12) in a three-game series in Beaumont, Texas. This comes after the Beavers suffered an 18-2 loss to Washington in their last outing, their worst home defeat since 1994. Oregon State will look to quickly reset as they face a Lamar team that has been strong at home this season.
Why it matters
This series represents an important opportunity for Oregon State to pick up some much-needed quad-two wins as they continue their tough early-season schedule. The Beavers are currently 1-3 in quad-two matchups, while Lamar is 2-0 in those games.
The details
The Cardinals have a 17-12 record on the season and sit in a two-way tie for first place in the Southland Conference. They boast a strong pitching staff, led by senior right-hander Chris Olivier and freshman lefty Jarret Williams, both of whom have sub-2.00 ERAs. Offensively, senior outfielder Tab Tracy leads Lamar with a .336 batting average and 13 stolen bases.
- The series begins on Thursday, April 2, a day earlier than usual to accommodate Oregon State's travel schedule.
- Game two is scheduled for Friday, April 3, with the series finale on Saturday, April 4.
The players
Mitch Canham
The head coach of the Oregon State Beavers baseball team.
Mason Pike
A freshman two-way player for Oregon State who will miss the remainder of the season due to an elbow injury.
Bryson Glassco
A junior infielder who has recently started at first base for the Beavers, as the team looks to get his bat in the lineup.
Jacob Krieg
A sophomore who has made the most starts at first base for Oregon State this season, but has struggled offensively.
Ethan Porter
A freshman who has also seen time at first base for the Beavers, known for his ability to get on base.
What they’re saying
“I think our guys take every game extremely seriously. You saw what they did last weekend (against UC Irvine and USC) and what they've been doing all year long. They've been battling their butts off. We had an off day today, but we treat every game like it's the most important of the year.”
— Mitch Canham, Head Coach, Oregon State Beavers
What’s next
After the series in Beaumont, the Beavers will head to Pullman, Washington, for a pair of midweek games against Washington State.
The takeaway
This series against Lamar represents a chance for Oregon State to bounce back from their lopsided loss to Washington and pick up some key wins as they continue their challenging early-season schedule. The Beavers will need to shore up their defense and get their bats going to take care of business against the Cardinals.
