Police have identified Ndiaga Diagne, a 53-year-old Senegalese-American, as the suspect in the early morning mass shooting on West Sixth Street in Austin that left three dead, including Diagne, and 14 injured. Authorities executed a search warrant at a home in Pflugerville connected to Diagne and are investigating a potential link to extremism, though the motive remains unclear.

Why it matters

The shooting on a crowded Austin street has shaken the community and raised concerns about public safety, as well as questions about the suspect's potential ties to extremism and how he obtained firearms despite being a foreign national. The investigation could uncover important details about the shooter's background and radicalization that may help prevent similar attacks in the future.

The details

According to police, Diagne drove a large SUV around the block multiple times before stopping in front of Buford's bar, putting on his flashers, and opening fire on patrons on the patio and in front of the bar. He then drove westbound on Sixth Street, parked, and began walking east on the street shooting at people. Officers already stationed nearby confronted and fatally shot Diagne at an intersection. Diagne was wearing clothing with an image of the Iranian flag and the words 'Property of Allah' at the time of the attack.

  • The shooting occurred just before 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 1, 2026.
  • Police executed a search warrant at a Pflugerville home connected to Diagne on Sunday afternoon.
