Waymo, the autonomous driving company owned by Alphabet, announced it will begin dispatching its self-driving robotaxis in four more cities in Texas and Florida, expanding its service to a total of 10 major U.S. metropolitan areas. The move marks a significant step toward Waymo's goal of surpassing 1 million weekly paid trips by the end of 2026.
Why it matters
Waymo's expansion solidifies its early lead in the autonomous vehicle market, as rival services from Tesla and Zoomo are still testing in only a few cities. The increased availability of Waymo's robotaxis could provide more transportation options for residents in these growing Sun Belt markets.
The details
Waymo's robotaxis will now be available in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Orlando, Florida, in addition to the six markets where they already operate: Phoenix, the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Miami, Atlanta, and Austin, Texas. The company's ride-hailing service will initially be limited to a select number of users with the Waymo app before expanding to the general public in those new markets.
