Downtown Austin Offers Free Parking During Convention Center Construction

The Downtown Austin Alliance launches a 10-week pilot program to support businesses affected by the convention center overhaul.

Published on Feb. 24, 2026

The Downtown Austin Alliance is rolling out a new effort to keep foot traffic flowing to downtown businesses as construction ramps up at the Austin Convention Center. The group is offering free and discounted parking through a 10-week 'Downtown Patron Parking Pilot', aimed at easing access to restaurants, bars and entertainment venues affected by the convention center's ongoing redevelopment.

Why it matters

The convention center construction is expected to reduce foot traffic to downtown businesses, so the parking pilot is an effort by the Downtown Austin Alliance to support those small businesses during the disruption.

The details

The pilot program, running through April 30, allows participating businesses to distribute parking vouchers to customers for up to two hours of free parking or discounted rates for longer stays at two centrally located garages. The vouchers are valid all day Sunday through Thursday and until 4 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. More than two dozen businesses are participating, including Antone's Nightclub, Cedar Door, Parker Jazz Club, Sushi Roku Austin, Central District Brewing, Moonshine Patio Bar & Grill, and The Escape Game.
