Knapp Heritage Park's historic one-room schoolhouse becomes a colorful pop art icon, celebrating Arlington's past while inviting the community to connect with it in the present.Arlington TodayKnapp Heritage Park, operated by the Arlington Historical Society, is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2024. The park features three of Arlington's oldest structures - the P.A. Watson Log House (1855), the Jopling-Melear Cabin (1863), and the North Side School (1909) - which were carefully relocated to the site in the early 2000s. The park also includes other historic artifacts like a blacksmith barn, a mineral well trough, and a former mayor's windmill, all set within the largest green spaces in downtown Arlington.
Why it matters
Knapp Heritage Park provides an important window into Arlington's past, allowing visitors to step back in time and connect with the city's roots. By preserving these historic structures and artifacts, the park helps tell the story of Arlington's development and the families who shaped its early history, like the prominent Knapp family who donated the land for the park.
The details
In the 1970s, the cabins and schoolhouse were first collected and moved to the Arlington Heritage Memorial Grounds, but limited public access. In 2001, the Knapp family donated the use of their former property on Front Street, and the structures were carefully relocated to the new Knapp Heritage Park site in 2003. The park was dedicated in 2004 and soon began hosting educational programs, events, and the annual Front Street Festival.

Knapp (1914-1989), practiced law in Arlington for over 50 years, and his grandchildren later donated the use of his former law office and their grandparents' home site for the creation of Knapp Heritage Park.
