The debut of the Java House Grand Prix of Arlington this weekend in the Dallas-Fort Worth Motorplex city's Entertainment District could produce a third different winner in as many races to start the 2026 NTT IndyCar Series season. With no prior data or simulator scans available, drivers say the new street course will level the playing field, at least initially, as they all experience it for the first time.
Why it matters
The new Java House GP of Arlington represents an opportunity for parity in the IndyCar Series, as the top teams and drivers will be on equal footing on the brand-new street course. This could open the door for an underdog to emerge victorious and shake up the early-season standings.
The details
The qualifying format for the Java House GP will also feature a new twist, with the Firestone Fast Six portion becoming a single-car, single-lap effort. This will give each of the top six qualifiers more exclusive TV time as FOX Sports expands its coverage to two hours. IndyCar and FOX hope this format change will add excitement and showcase the competition.
- The Java House Grand Prix of Arlington will take place this weekend (March 15-17, 2026).
- Qualifying will be held on Saturday, March 16 at 2:30 p.m. ET.
- The race will be broadcast live on Sunday, March 17 starting at 12:30 p.m. ET.
The players
Alex Palou
A driver for Chip Ganassi Racing who won the season-opening race at St. Petersburg.
Josef Newgarden
A driver for Team Penske who won the second race of the season at Phoenix.
Alexander Rossi
A driver for Ed Carpenter Racing who is hoping to put together a complete weekend and showcase his team's off-season improvements.
Christian Rasmussen
Rossi's teammate at Ed Carpenter Racing who is also carrying the distinctive livery of the Java House race title sponsor.
Doug Boles
The President of IndyCar, who gave a hearty thumbs-up to the new qualifying format.
What they’re saying
“This will allow the competitors and sponsors who earned spots in the Firestone Fast Six the full attention of the broadcast during its qualifying attempt. It also allows for viewers at home to see just what makes qualifying in IndyCar so competitive and the perfection that it takes to sit atop the grid and earn the right to lead the field to the green flag on race day.”
— Doug Boles, IndyCar President
“It's really cool that IndyCar takes the initiative to try something different, even though we don't really know how it's going to go. There's still a lot of unknowns, probably some kinks that need to be sorted out. For now, it's very exciting, something new, a new format. Hopefully we can make it in to actually get to try it.”
— Christian Rasmussen, Ed Carpenter Racing Driver
“I'm thrilled about it. I think it's been talked about internally for a while. I think it will add a huge amount of excitement to what is already a pretty awesome and entertaining qualifying format.”
— Alexander Rossi, Ed Carpenter Racing Driver
What’s next
The judge in the case will decide on Tuesday whether or not to allow Walker Reed Quinn out on bail.
The takeaway
This new street course in Arlington represents an opportunity for parity in the IndyCar Series, as the top teams and drivers will be on equal footing. The innovative qualifying format change could also add excitement and showcase the competition, potentially leading to an underdog victory that shakes up the early-season standings.
