The Texas A&M Forest Service reported on Sunday that progress is being made on containing several wildfires in the Amarillo area. The Lavender fire, which burned across Oldham, Potter, and Valley De Oro counties, has reached 95% containment after burning 18,423 acres. The Canadian Bridge fire in Hutchinson County, the 8 Ball Fires in Armstrong and Donley Counties, and the Arbor Fire in Hale County have all reached 100% containment, with the 8 Ball Fires burning 13,500 acres and the other two fires burning significantly less acreage.
Why it matters
Wildfires are a major threat to communities in the Texas Panhandle region, especially during periods of high winds, low humidity, and lack of rainfall. The progress made by first responders in containing these fires helps to minimize damage and risk to local residents and infrastructure.
