Retired professional baseball player Mark Teixeira has won the Republican primary in Texas's 21st congressional district, according to Decision Desk HQ. Teixeira defeated a crowded GOP field in the race to succeed Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas), who is running for state attorney general. Teixeira, a three-time MLB All-Star and 2009 World Series champion with the New York Yankees, has closely aligned himself with former President Trump and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott.
Why it matters
Teixeira's victory in the Republican primary sets him up to succeed the conservative Rep. Chip Roy in a solidly Republican district. His alignment with Trump and Abbott could make him a rising star in the Texas GOP, and his background as a former professional athlete could give him crossover appeal.
The details
Teixeira, who retired from baseball in 2016, threw his name into the race last August after Roy launched his bid for state Attorney General. Trump endorsed Teixeira last month, calling the former first baseman a 'TOTAL WINNER, on and off the field!' In November, Teixeira will face off against one of three Democrats: Kristin Hook, Regina Vanburg and Gary Taylor. Roy defeated Hook by roughly 25 percentage points in 2024.
