LIS Technologies' planned laser enrichment facility in Oak Ridge aims to provide a more efficient and scalable solution to support the future of nuclear energy in the United States.Oak Ridge TodayLIS Technologies Inc., the only U.S.-based developer of patented laser uranium enrichment technology, has closed a $7.128 million oversubscribed funding round. The additional capital will help expedite the company's Project F.U.E.L. and the construction of its LIST Island facility at the former K-25 Site in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, as it works to build domestic uranium enrichment capabilities to support the nuclear fuel cycle.
Why it matters
LIS Technologies' laser-based enrichment technology is designed to offer greater efficiency, scalability, and a smaller facility footprint compared to traditional enrichment methods. This latest funding round reflects strong investor interest in expanding domestic uranium enrichment to support both the existing nuclear fleet and the deployment of advanced reactor designs.
The details
The oversubscribed funding round, LIS Technologies' fifth consecutive, will support the continued progression of Project F.U.E.L. (Future Uranium Enrichment with Lasers) and the initial phases of development at the company's LIST Island facility in Oak Ridge. LIS Technologies plans to build a state-of-the-art laser enrichment plant capable of producing up to 5.5 million Separative Work Units (SWUs) annually, with construction targeted for the early 2030s.
- LIS Technologies was awarded an Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract by the DOE in 2024 to participate in the $3.4 billion Low-Enriched Uranium (LEU) Enrichment Acquisition Program.
- The company expects to begin construction plans for its commercial LEU-3 Enrichment Facility on LIST Island in 2026, with completion and initial operations targeted for the early 2030s.
