Vanair, a leading manufacturer of mobile power solutions, has unveiled its EPEQ Electrified Power Equipment ecosystem at the Technology & Maintenance Council (TMC) Annual Meeting in Nashville. The EPEQ system is a modular, battery-electric alternative to traditional auxiliary power units (APUs), designed to power the heating, cooling, and electrical systems of Class 8 trucks without the need for engine idling.

Why it matters

The trucking industry is facing rising costs associated with engine idling, as well as increasing power demands from in-cab technology. Vanair's EPEQ system offers a scalable, electrified solution to address these challenges, potentially reducing fuel consumption, maintenance expenses, and emissions.

The details

At the core of the EPEQ system are 48-volt ELiMENT batteries, now featuring IP67-rated enclosures for enhanced protection. These 5kW modules can be scaled up to 30kW, providing substantial power capacity. The system also includes inverters and options for solar charging, allowing for a comprehensive solution to reduce engine idling and lower operational costs.

What they’re saying

“Drivers need reliable heating, cooling, and electrical power without running the main engine. What we bring to this market is not a single-purpose APU. It's a complete, integrated power ecosystem that scales to the application.”

— Chip Jones, National Manager, Electrified Products Group

What’s next

Vanair plans to continue expanding the capabilities of the EPEQ system, including offering 12-volt solutions for day cabs and regional haulers, as well as the EPEQ EPTO, a battery-driven hydraulic system for operating liftgates and pumps without idling the truck engine.

The takeaway

Vanair's EPEQ system represents a significant step forward in the electrification of the trucking industry, providing fleets with a scalable, integrated power solution that can reduce fuel consumption, maintenance costs, and emissions, while also addressing the growing power demands of modern in-cab technologies.
